An inset
basin is simply a wash basin designed to be set into a piece of furniture
or a flat surface. They can be fully inset, where the mounting surface
is larger than the basin or semi inset (semi recessed) where the basin
protrudes in front of the mounting surface. There is also an option which
fixes underneath the surface, having no rim raised above the vanity top.
Often these are referred to as vanity basins. The set on basin is another
format best described here, which sits on top of a unit instead of being
recessed into the top surface.
Oasis and
Loire illustrate two traditional style vanity basins, fully inset, both
with two tap holes for a pair of pillar taps. Note also the plug and chain
type waste fillings.
This fully inset basin from the Starck series 3 collection illustrated a more contemporary style, but it still retains a traditional flavour with the upstand at the back and the wide tap ledge. This version has one tap hole for use with a monoblock mix as shown.

However
the semi recessed format is also available in a more traditional style,
like this Adelphi. Although the basin is illustrated here built into a
fairly wide surface, it can also be fitted into the 300mm slim units.
Back to
the undermount style basin to show a circular version from the Duravit
Architec series. Note the surface mounted 3-hole tap set.
Again from
the Architec series this is the round inset basin. Here it is mounted
into a glass surface. Note thewall mounted mixer tap and the stylish chrome
bottle trap.
